I interviewed the Co-Founders at StehthoMe: Wojciech Radomski, Paweł Elbanowski, Marcin Szajek, Honorata Hafke-Dys and Jędrzej Kociński. StethoMe is a Polish Health Technology Startup providing the first system that detects abnormalities in lungs and heart using AI (Artificial Intelligence).

StethoMe: An AI Startup Focussed On Healthcare And Telemedicine.

Why did you create StethoMe? Founders’ personal story.

The idea comes from the co-founders of StethoMe – Honorata Hafke-Dys, Ph.D. and Jędrzej Kociński, Assoc. Prof. Both of them are scientists, but also parents who struggled with frequent respiratory tract infections in their children. After going through this experience, Honorata and Jędrzej discussed the idea of an electronic wireless stethoscope that could potentially change the lives of many families around the world.

The implementation of this idea would not have been possible if it had not been for Wojciech Radomski, Paweł Elbanowski and Marcin Szajek, who were running a service providing IT company for over 10 years.

Three years ago all five of them met and decided to commercialize auscultation sound studies that were already being conducted at that time by Honorata Hafke-Dys and Jędrzej Kociński.

What is your vision?

Initially, we have focused on families with children. We have wanted to help them fight against numerous infections and diseases related to the respiratory system. Our goal was to solve the problem of remote auscultation, dispel parents’ doubts about whether this is the right time to visit a doctor. This idea has definitely developed.

During the creation process of our solution, we have noticed more and more needs, which among others were the support of the diagnostic process of doctors or unnecessary medical visits eliminations, also among adults. That is why we are currently striving to provide both parents and adults the opportunity to have a medical visit without leaving home and to obtain more accurate test results faster.

We want our technology, through telemedicine, to contribute to ensuring equal access to health care services in the future, especially for those who currently face limited access to it (e.g. the elderly).

How to you help your customers and partners?

Primary care faces two key issues number of issues. Firstly, the high rate of misdiagnosis that occurs (cases of delayed, missed, and incorrect diagnosis are common – in the range of 10 per cent to 20 per cent) and, secondly, the very high number of unnecessary visits (up to 70 per cent in the US). StethoMe aims to change this and provide an improved solution for both patients and healthcare professionals.

Addressing the misdiagnosis and unnecessary visits.

StethoMe addresses these issues by offering incomparably higher sound level and quality compared with other stethoscopes available on the market. Results are shared directly with a doctor who then advises as to whether that patient needs to visit a doctor or emergency room, or can remain at home under close supervision.

StethoMe is the only device of its kind in the world that not only records and forwards good quality recordings to the doctors, but also uses innovative algorithms which, by proposing an initial assessment, aid doctors in correct diagnosis.

Thanks to StethoMe and implemented the quality verification system patient can perform an examination at home easily. What’s more, it causes that the patient can avoid unnecessary on-site visits, get immediate feedback about a health condition and has the possibility of ongoing monitoring of chronic diseases without contacting the physician.

Our partners see the value in the optimization of resources.

On the other side, our partners (telemedicine providers, insurance companies as well as medical providers) see the value in the optimization of resources by reducing the number of unnecessary visits. Among other benefits, especially for medical professionals are efficient and more accurate diagnosis and remote access to medical history.

What makes StethoMe Different?

StethoMe

Thanks to the StethoMe AI and its effectiveness we are able to support doctors in the diagnosis. StethoMe AI is the certified medical system intended for sound analysis. The system relies on artificial intelligence algorithms that ensure a quick and accurate medical examination. AI algorithms accuracy is 29% higher than pulmonologists in detecting pathological sounds due to pulmonary infections, asthma, COPD, etc. Moreover, StethoMe AI is 49% more accurate than primary care physicians in detecting pathological heart murmurs.

Equally important is the fact, the quality of the StethoMe solution is confirmed by a medical certificate. The AI algorithms within the scope of lung auscultation in children have been certified in the EU as a class 2a medical device (CE 2274). The same certification class has been obtained for the stethoscope. The medical certification of AI algorithms is the first such certification in the world.

Beyond the sounds analysis, StehoMe AI enables patients to perform an examination at home. The quality verification system (also based on AI algorithms) ensures that patients do this as well as a doctor would.
