Discover LORIOT The Global LoRaWAN Network Server Provider
I interviewed Julian Studer Co-Founder & CFO/COO at LORIOT, LoRaWAN Network Server Provider. LORIOT is a Swiss leading Global IoT company, already present in more than 130 countries on 5 continents.
Due to a unique positioning in the LoRa ecosystem as both software provider and network operator, LORIOT is able to provide one of the most powerful, complete and secure solutions in the market as well as tailor-made end-to-end solutions for IoT applications.
Why did you create Loriot?
I created LORIOT together with my co-founder Vit Prajzler, a former IBM researcher involved in the development of the LoRaWAN protocol. He had the very first intuition, he understood the potential of this technology to accelerate the adoption and expansion of the Internet of Things and shared this idea with me, working at that time for UBS bank, to validate the business opportunity.
True to his prediction, in recent years, this long-range, low-power technology has contributed significantly to the growth of IoT use cases in production.
We are convinced IoT will successfully tackle some of the major global challenges, and after an in-deep analysis of the market, and leveraging our complementary backgrounds, we decided to establish the company in December 2015 and settled the headquartes in Zurich.
Julian Studer – CO-Founder & CFO/COO personal story
I come from a finance and economic background with 10 years of experience in the Swiss and international finance and banking industry. My work, I was responsible for all types of investment vehicles for key clients, together with my inclination for languages, I can speak 5 different languages, and personal skills made me develop strong business relations all around the globe.
For me was natural to take over the business development and financial tasks in LORIOT. Today the company has grown and we have offices also in Valencia and Budapest and my responsibilities have grown accordingly. At this stage is key nurturing the team and ensuring everyone is highly motivated. I’m extremely proud of the team we are building and they make this task extremely easy.
Julian Studer – Co-Founder & CFO/COO Personal Passion.
On a more personal side, I have two main passions. I love to ride my motorbike through the Swiss Alps, the black forest or on the race track. the other passion is freediving. Currently, I can hold my breath for nearly 6 minutes and reach depths of more than 50m. This result requires great training in a discipline that is a real challenge for both the body and the mind. I find it extremely useful also on a professional level as I feel it increases my performance and it allows me to discover the world from a different perspective.
What is your vision?
The Internet of things is everywhere, it is changing our lives and our habits often without even realizing it. Just think how a simple step counter (or an advanced smart wrist) has made us more attentive to our lifestyle by helping us to have a healthier one.
This is a very evident example, others are often invisible to our eyes but, nevertheless, they are dramatically revolutionizing our cities, our offices, the services we use and the production processes of the products we consume.
“Small changes can generate a huge positive impact on our lives and reduce our footprint on the environment.” – Julian Studer – Co-Founder at Loriot.
I believe that technology is a key driver in addressing the challenges of our times and that’s exactly what we want to achieve in LORIOT. Our vision is a future where the IoT is available to everyone, with no barriers to its adoption, anywhere in the world.
How do you help your customers and partners?
The term “Internet of Things (IoT)” dates back to 1999, but it’s only in recent years that it has been possible to observe a real increase in IoT use cases. In fact, in the beginning, the main barriers to deployment in IoT were the high setup costs, maintenance fees, architectural complexity, and high device energy consumption which forced the continuous requirement to replace empty batteries or install disruptive electrical wiring.
All these factors resulted in a dramatic reduction of possible use cases and poor scalability.
Low Power Long Range transmission technologies, such as LoRaWAN, have made IoT cheaper, faster and highly scalable due to characteristics such as low power consumption, high capacity, long-range coverage and deep signal penetration. A single gateway covering a range of up to 50 Km and battery-powered sensor devices sending data for up to 10 years. Gateways and sensors are low complexity, low maintenance and cheap to operate in the long-term. The complex task to provide secure and effective communication between the sensor and end application is carried out by the Network Server which is the mandatory element in the architecture. LoRaWAN devices and gateway require a network server to manage LoRaWAN specific mechanisms and requirements.
The connector between objects and IoT applications.
We provide this element that represents the middle link between objects and IoT applications. Our customers span from IoT enthusiasts and small startups to large Telcos. Utility Companies and City Governments. We help them run their IoT infrastructures and solutions with ease so that they can focus on the use cases and bring value to the end-users dramatically reducing costs and time-to-market.
What makes Loriot different?
As pioneers of the technology and one of the first movers in the market, we are proud to have established an excellent reputation.
One of the most advanced solution in the market.
Advanced features, high level of interoperability and integration with numerous hardware and software elements of the IoT value chain, strong security, far beyond the security standards already guaranteed by the LoRaWAN protocol itself (and being a Swiss company this could not have been any different). Those characteristics make our solution one of the most advanced in the market.
Plus we want it to be accessible to anyone, hobbyist or professional, anywhere in the world. That’s why we have built the largest geographically distributed server infrastructure with 16 public servers ensuring low-latency and high performance worldwide. Anyone can register a free account on the nearest server and start playing with IoT.
